The Sky View Bobcat Girls and Boys Teams opened up their season with the annual Blue and White Scrimmage on Friday, November 19th. Those games gave the parents and local fans a chance to see both teams in action. The coaches of both teams also got a chance to see their teams in action, and evaluate their progress heading in to regular season match ups that began this week. Between games the fans were treated to several dances put on by groups of young girls that attended the Cheer Camp this year.

Girls Basketball

The girl’s team returns five seniors for this year’s team, Maury Beorchia, Jessica Duffin, Lindsey Walker, Cortney Ballard, and Sydnee Johnson. Last year’s senior class saw four players go onto the next level with Aubry Boehme, Taylor rock, and Nicole Hansen all signing up to play for the Rattlers of Otero Junior College in Colorado, and Amy Andrus who signed with Metropolitan State College in Denver. The Sky View girls team will be looking for leadership and scoring out of their returning seniors who have big shoes to fill to replace the points scored by the departing graduates. Head Coach Paul Hansen had this to say, “We lost a lot of points and experience from last year, but these girls have seen a lot of experience as sophomores, and on JV. We like our team, we like what we see, were going to be young but we’ve got a good group of girls.”

The girls opened up their regular season play against the 5A Knights of Lone Peak last night in a game that they fell short in. Lone Peak lead by the shooting of Marquelle Funk who had 25 points and Whitney Johnson who added 15 more, proved to be too much for the Lady Cats in their season opener. The Bobcats were lead in scoring by Tara Goldman who put up 8 points, followed by Cortney Ballard, Jessica Duffin, and Lindsey Walker who each had 7 points.

The girls will see their next action tonight when they host the 4A Region 6 Wildcats of Woods Cross High School. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Sky View. This will be a busy week for the girls as they will turn around and play again tomorrow night at 4A Region 7 opponents the Mighty Bruins of Mountain View High School.

Boys Basketball

The boy’s team returns six seniors this year among those are, Jordan Nielsen and Don Corbell who both saw quite a bit of action on the varsity squad last year, as well as Grayson Moore who saw a little bit of playing time on varsity. Other seniors returning this year are Colton Arave, Anthony Israelson, and Riley Jensen. Head Coach Kevin Andersen had this to say about his team; “We’ve just got to get some experience first of all. You know replacing some of our kids from last year will be tough. Kyler Carlson started for three years and led us in scoring and now we’ve got to try to get a balanced attack. I think we’ve just got to play solid defense. With our size we’ve got to rebound, we’ve got to hopefully dominate the boards, and hopefully get some balance … some inside, outside stuff going, and see what we can do.”

The boys team certainly showed what they are capable of in last night’s endowment game against the 5A Eagles of Skyline High School, beating them by 22 points in a 66 to 44 victory. Sky View was led by the shooting of Grayson Moore who put up 22 points and Casey Oliverson who added 20 more.

The boys team will play on the road tomorrow night against the 3A Bear River Bears in a game set to tipoff at 7 p.m. The boys will have their season home openers next week in a couple of back-to-back games starting Thursday, December 9th against the 4A Region 9 Snow Canyon Warriors. Friday night the Cats will host 4A Region 9 foes in the Pine View Panthers. Both games are scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m.
