Two public hearings are scheduled for tomorrow’s city council meeting. The first is over an incentive proposal for planned unit developers. If the developer adds upgrades to their development — brick siding, a clubhouse, covered parking — they can increase the number of units for the development. In the case of a 90-unit development, they could add maybe six more. If the city council passes the amendment, it will be up to the Planning and Zoning commission to work out the details on what features would be rewarded.

The Smithfield City Council seems to have a fairly routine meeting scheduled for Wednesday evening. They plan to consider: setting the fee schedule for 2012, adopting 2012 city council meeting rules of conduct, signing an agreement over the northern canal, approving Smithfield Implement’s request to put signs on the grass in front of the store. They are also planning to appoint planning commission members and they will have a discussion with Steve Krebs from Queststar Gas Company.

Planning commission reconsiders Smithfield animal laws

SMITHFIELD — Kris Monson, a City Councilwoman for 10 years, stood before the Planning Commission Wednesday night to propose modifications to Smithfield’s animal rights ordinances. “I’m just going to propose an idea,” Monson said. “If you don’t like this, I’m not going to work very hard.”

Agenda: Hearings for budget, airport zoning, and chickens

Three public hearings are planned for Wednesday’s Smithfield City Council Meeting — one to amend the budget for 2011-2012, the second is about keeping chickens, and a third for the airport overlay zone. The council will also consider the “Recycle Market Development Zone” and appointments to the planning commission.

Two public hearings are planned for Wednesday’s city council meeting. The first is a request by Kristi Witherspoon to change property from agricultural to single family. The second is a hearing over various changes to the zoning ordinance. Also on the agenda for discussion: the cost participation agreement for the Cache Emergency Watershed Project and the storm drainage and flood control agreement for the canals.

Smithfield commits to community covenant to support military families

SMITHFIELD — First Lt. Earl Simmons presented the City Council on Wednesday with a proposal to participate in a Community Covenant program. The program is set up to help the community show support for military families. The program focuses mostly on families that have a member deployed on active duty, but they are also open to past and inactive military members.

Smithfield City approves 19.6% property tax increase to bolster the general fund

Last week in a meeting that stretched on for over four hours the Smithfield City Council listened for nearly two and a half of those hours to residents voice concerns over a proposed 19.6% increase in property tax; before vowing to go back and see if there were places that they could make any deeper cuts. Wednesday night in a council meeting held at the Senior Center it took the council only an hour to offer explanations and thoughts before motions were made, seconded, and unanimously approved the increase.

Agenda: Council set to vote on 2011-2012 tax rate and budget

The Smithfield City Council is meeting Wednesday to finalize the 2011-2012 tax rate and city budget. The state tax commissioner will be there to assist in calculating the tax rate based on changes the council may or may not make to the budget. The meeting will be held in the Senior Citizen Center (375 Canyon Rd) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 6 p.m.

Smithfield City proposed tax increase; Residents say not the right time

In a night where there was great respect expressed for the members of the Smithfield Mayor and City Council Members, a civilized and impassioned plea from residents sent a message to the council that now is not the time for a proposed 19.6% property tax increase. The council then responded with a well organized and educational presentation on the nature of the general fund, and a promise to look for areas of further cuts before making the deciding vote.

The Smithfield City Council is holding a public hearing over the proposed property tax increase. The expected increase is $27.88 per year for a $185,000 home and $50.69 for a business of equal value. The public hearing will be held during the council’s regular meeting on Wednesday, August 10 at 6 p.m.

Agenda: Three rezone requests including two requests for multi-family housing

Three requests for rezoning are before the council and public during this Wednesday’s regular city council meeting. Joseph Chambers is asking for smaller lot sizes near 314 West and 100 North, Lowell and Nanette King are asking for multi-family zoning for land at 134 North and 100 West, and Lowell King is also asking for multi-family zoning for land near 855 South and 250 East.

Richmond’s horse pull is this Saturday, June 18

RICHMOND—The draft horse pull and open horse show that are usually held during Richmond’s Black and White Days celebration will be held this Saturday, June 18, in the field behind LD’s Café. Organizers have draft horse teams entered from throughout the northwest and Canada.

Land near Lee’s annexed for future housing

After some consideration, the Smithfield City Council approved of Ordinance 11-08 Thursday night, which allowed the annexation of a 10.10 acre plot of land East of Lee’s. They also approved a resolution amending the fiscal year 2010-2011 budget for Smithfield City.

City council discusses flood preparation

SMITHFIELD—With temperatures set to rise significantly in the coming weeks, flooding was a primary concern at the Smithfield City Council meeting Wednesday night. With the rise of Summit Creek after rainy weather last week, and springs west of town haven’t been existent in more than 30 years coming alive again, Mayor Darrell Simmons said city crews have been preparing day and night, and that the they are well prepared for what may come.
