Sky View Booster Club to hold Annual Auction Fundraiser

The Sky View Booster Club is holding its annual auction and dinner or March 19 at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from any Sky View athlete, or at the front office at Sky View. Tickets will be available at the door, however; advance purchases are encouraged to enable the planning the correct quantity of food.

Teachers applaud board decision to pay employees a one-time stipend

When Richard Knight motioned to pay district employees a one-time stipend and to pay it now, the room erupted in applause. The Cache County School Board then voted 3-2 to pass the stipend. The final agreement is to pay all teachers and administrators an equal amount of $1035. The classified employees will receive a one-time payment equal to 2.1 percent of their annual pay.

Agenda: How will the Cache School Board use federal funds?

The Cache School Board is scheduled to decide how the U.S. Education Jobs Funds will be disbursed. Superintendent Steven Norton recommended using the money for a one-time payment to teachers and employees to offset increased insurance costs. Also on the agenda are reports from the “No Cussing Club” at Mountain Crest, the USBA convention, and legislative issues. The board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at the Cache County School District technology center (2035 North 1200 East).

Cache School Board accepts federal jobs stimulus money

Thursday evening the Cache County School Board approved an agreement to accept federal jobs stimulus money. The district is required to only use the money for employee compensation, benefits, retain existing employees, recall former employees, or hire new employees. Troy Pugmire, CEA President, said he read in the paper that some board members wanted to use the money to increase professional development days. Although those days are important, said Pugmire, the teachers are already using their free time to prepare. The teachers would rather see the money used to offset increased insurance costs.

The Cache School Board meets Thursday evening to consider: school teachers of the year recognition, swearing in new board members, trustland amendment requests, U.S. DOE jobs funds. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the district technology center (2035 N 1200 E).

Cache School Board rejects land purchase

The Cache County School Board rejected a proposal to buy 40-acres of land on the south end of the valley. Superintendent Steven Norton said there was an opportunity that deserved looking into. However, they felt there were some issues that were unresolved so the board decided to pass.

Academic standards moving up a grade for Cache schools

Big changes are coming for students of the Cache County School District. Over the next four years the district will implement new core curriculum standards that will change the very structure of how students are taught. Gone are the separate classes of Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus. In it’s place will be high school math courses designed to interleave all these concepts together and build on them during each successive term.

Agenda: School teachers of the year recognitions

Thursday evening the Cache County School Board will honor seven teachers with School Teacher of the Year awards. Kellie Garcia and Jim Payant will also be recognized for their contributions to special education. The school board is scheduled to consider: the 2011-12 calendar, a grant presentation, common core standards presentation. The board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the district technology center (2035 N 1200) on Thursday, November 18, 2010.

Sky View High School students create bite-sized paintings

Emilie Wheeler posted a terrific story about an tiny art project at Sky View: “Two of the school’s art teachers have teamed up to have students participate in a new type of project. Instead of large oil or watercolor paintings or life-size portrait sketches, the students have been working on a smaller scale.”

Sky View honors veterans with assembly, gun salute

Arie Kirk wrote a nice story about the Veteran’s Assembly at Sky View High School Thursday morning: “About 100 veterans — representing the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Air Force — attended the high school program. They were honored in word, song, video and with a 21-gun salute.”

Agenda: School considering purchasing real property

The Cache County School Board is holding a private meeting on Thursday to discuss the “Purchase of Real Property”. It’s perfectly normal for school boards to hold executive sessions for these discussions because they involve financial transactions with a third-party. There just isn’t anything else for the school board to discuss at their study session. They’ll meet, have roll call, say the pledge, and go into executive session. So there won’t be anything to see. The board does not vote on anything in executive session. They will likely approve any purchased during the next regular board meeting.

Agenda: Cache School District annual financial report

The Cache School Board will be mostly discussing the annual financial reports at their next regular school board meeting. The district financial audit report, annual financial reports and budget reports take up the bulk of the agenda items. The board will also consider a declaration for National Arts and Humanities month plus a request to approve the Utah Consolidated Application. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 2035 North 1200 East in North Logan. It is open to the public.

Each month the administration at Sky View sends around a ballot where the teachers nominate kids from each class to be the students of the month. The students are evaluated based on attendance, timely submission of homework, class citizenship, participation, grades.

Agenda: School district boundaries, graduation requirements

The Cache County School Board will meet Thursday evening to discuss: property exchange with Logan City, broadcasting future board meetings online, updated high school graduation requirements, comprehensive counseling program, employee retirement request. Following the regular meeting the board will meet in a private, executive session to discuss purchasing real estate.

Logan school district requests boundary change meeting

The Logan School District is requesting changing district boundaries between Logan and Cache County School Districts. Specifically they wish to annex land south-west of the airport, 20 acres north of 600 South near 1400 West and the proposed apartment building at 700 S, Logan which is part of the Riverwoods development. Thursday evening the Cache County School Board approved a meeting between the two school board presidents and superintendents.

The Cache County School Board will meet Thursday evening to discuss: Logan School district boundary changes, school match report, bus rental request by the Top of Utah Marathon, teacher negotiation settlement. The board meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, August 26 at the Professional Development Center (2063 N 1200 E, North Logan).

Calling all Sky View Sophomores

Sky View High School is hosting a first-ever Sophomore Orientation a day before the regular school schedule begins. Every Sky View Sophomore should attend. It’s scheduled for Wednesday, August 25 from 7:50 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. Busses will be running.

The Cache School Board meets Thursday evening to consider: district transportation costs, employee negotiation agreement, 2010 tax rate and the adjusted preliminary budget. This is the only scheduled board meeting for July. The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 8 at the Cache County School District offices (2063 N 1200 E, Logan, UT).

Scheduled pay increases survive school district budget cuts

Teacher and employee scheduled pay increases — called steps and lanes — passed in the Cache County School District preliminary budget for 2010-11. Teachers expressed strong opposition to a possible freeze of steps and lanes in the May 21 board meeting. Board members on several occasions also expressed a desire not to make cuts to teacher’s pay — and expected pay — unless they have no alternative. Tuesday evening the Cache School Board passed a budget that cut $3.47 million from expected expenses.

Healthy fun at Sky View’s sprint triathlon

Friday’s break in the rain was just enough for 11 individuals and 7 teams to participate in a great triathlon at Sky View High School. It was the first of what Principal Swenson hopes will be an annual event called the Sky View Sprint Triathlon. Initiated/sposored by the Sky View PTSA, it was great fun for all the participants and supporters as they manuevered through the swimming pool, the bike course which included Smithfield Canyon, and the running course which had a killer hill right at the start. Teachers voice opposition to a salary freeze

Teachers want the school district to keep “steps and lane” salary increases. This is the message five teachers gave the school board Thursday evening. Ilene Davies, president of the Cache Education Association, told the board that steps and lanes are a priority to CEA members. “This practice will help teachers feel like they can go into the profession,” said Davies. “If we do not fund them, we will lose the best and the brightest.”

Agenda: School board year end recognition, 2010-11 budget

The Cache County School District Board of Education meets Thursday evening. The agenda includes recognition of School Teacher of the Year from Greenville, Lewiston, North Park, Park, River Heights, Sunrise and Summit schools. Also recognition of Classified Employees of the Year, 4A Coach of the Year, 4A boys state swimming champions, and Huntsman Awards. The board is expected to consider the budget for next year. The meeting begins Thursday, May 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the technology center (2035 N 1200 E).

Agenda: School board looking over budget cuts

The Cache School Board will meet Thursday evening in a study session. The agenda includes “trustlands”, SVHS clubs, and “Race to the Top.” However, it’s likely that the budget discussion will take up the bulk of the meeting. The district needs to cut between $2.4 to $4.7 million from next year’s budget.

The Cache County Board of Education will meet Thursday evening to consider: naming the new elementary schools in Nibley and Smithfield; policy regarding bullying and hazing; revised retirement policy; 2010-2011 school fees. The board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at 2035 North 1200 East, North Logan. It is open to the public.

Cache County School District has posted on their home page a link for patrons to give input for the budget cuts that must happen for next school year. There is a 16 minute video presentation on parts of the budget—where the money comes from and goes to, a spreadsheet with specific dollar amounts for each type of expenditure in Cache District and a Survey for comments to be received with the following four questions:
