Five new girls wear the tiara for the Health Days Royalty of 2010. Jordan Rock, Mallory Sorensen, Elizabeth Wilkey, Stephanie Bland, and Melanie Buchanan were selected from 13 contestants Saturday night. The evening began with an excellent introduction by an A Capella group with no name.

The five gentlemen in dark suits said they began the group less than four weeks before and hadn’t had time to pick out a name. Darroll Young, Ben Snow, Mike Graves, Mike Bladen, and Nate Baxter took turns introducing the 2010 Health Days Scholarship Program contestants while singing Kiss the Girl. Afterwards, while the girls were changing into their evening gowns, Chad Downs was recognized as Citizen of the Year by the Lions Club.

Then each young lady came out in an evening gown, introduced herself, modeled her evening wear, and then answered an impromptu question. Five judges — James Reese, Peggy Williams, Brenda Anthony, Lars Lambertsen and Chellie Lambertsen — would score each performance and hand their votes to Thomas Gibbons, the certified public accountant in charge of tallying the votes.

Poster Contest

After the evening wear and questions the girls filed off stage and Stacey Dority, Health Days Chairperson, came to the stage. In the hallways of the school were poster after poster drawn by elementary school students from the Smithfield area. Winners of this poster contest were then announced, nervously brought to the stage, and given gift certificates.

2009 Royalty

Then the 2009 Health Days Royalty were recognized for the last time as they were about to “pass the torch” to this year’s royalty.

2010 Royalty

Our a cappella group with no name then sang a crowd favorite of Kiss Him Goodbye before announcing this year’s Miss Congeniality — Elizabeth Wilkey. Elizabeth was then twice surprised as she was also named one of this year’s Health Days Royalty along with Jordan Rock, Mallory Sorensen, Stephanie Bland, and Melanie Buchanan.

The happy girls hugged each other while family and friends stood at the stage taking pictures. After the show was finished they sat on the stage listening to Shanae Anderson explain all the duties, performances, and responsibilities the girls will have for the coming year.

Congratulations to all the contestants, last year’s royalty and thank you to the judges and MCs for the great show.
