Last regular game a let down for Bobcats

The Sky View Bobcats lost somewhat of a meaningless game Wednesday against the Box Elder Bees, 54-47. The Bobcats (16-5, 11-4) didn’t have much to play for, with the exception of pride, and struggled all night to find an offensive rhythm. Free-throws were the difference make of the game, as Box Elder (12-9, 8-7) hit 22-of-29 and Sky View only managed 9-of-14 from the charity stripe.

“In all reality that game meant not very much. I thought our kids came out and played with effort. They played hard and we had our chances,” Sky View Bobcat head coach Kyle Anderson said.

Junior Don Corbell led the Bobcats with 14 points on the night. Senior Kyler Carlsen chipped in nine points while Senior Nick Eskelson added eight points of his own.

“He came off the bench and did a really good job,” Anderson said of Corbell.

The Bobcats definitely had their chances, through three quarters of action. The Bobcats trailed, 11-10 after one quarter, and actually led at halftime, 23-22. The Bobcats had a balanced offense through the first half and through the third quarter, and then Box Elder began to pull away. Stifling defense along with aggressive drives to the hoop put the Bees on top at the end of regulation.

In the low scoring event, the Bees contained Carlsen, who normally scores double-digits, and the Bobcats limited Box Elder star, Brant Mecham to just two field goals on the night. Mecham, however, made his living on the foul line, hitting 9-of-10 free-throws. Coach Anderson was still pleased with the Bobcats effort on Mecham.

“I thought they did a great job defensively on (Mecham),” Anderson said.

Despite the loss coach Anderson is pleased with his teams’ effort throughout the year, and with the playoff position they find themselves in.

“Second in region, we have a home game Tuesday,” Anderson said.

The Bobcats face the Olympus Titans from Region 6 and the Titans (18-3) could prove to be a tough test.

“They’re a good team and we’ve got to respect them. People thought they would win state this year. They’ve been ranked No. 1 for a lot of the season. We’ve gotta challenge,” Anderson said.

Titans senior guard Nick Paulos is averaging just over 15 points a game and senior forward Brady Connor is averaging just over 12 points per game.

“They’re tall, lanky; they like to shoot the ball. They put 25 3’s up last night (lost to Bountiful, 62-58) in that game and made eight.”

Coach Anderson is confident though that his team will be prepared and hopes that the Sky View faithful will come out in strong numbers.

“We’ll prepare for them and we’ll give it our best shot. I know our kids will, and I think we can beat them.”

One key to the game for the Bobcats will be defense, according to Anderson.

“Our defense has been our strength all year and we’ve got to bring it that on Tuesday. Hopefully we can get out and defend. You can stop their 3’s because they shoot so many, but we’ve gotta to try and limit that,” Anderson said.

In post season play, the Bobcats must not hold back either.

“Let it all hang out now. There is nothing to save it for. Bring some energy and some enthusiasm and go for it,” Anderson.

Game time against the Titans is set for 7 p.m. at Bobcat Gymnasium on Tuesday.
