Another game against Logan equaled another blowout victory for the Bobcats Thursday night at Crimson Gym. For the first time this season, the two teams met on the Grizzlies home turf. The change in venue did little to effect the outcome, however, as Sky View completed the season sweep of the series with a 75-53 victory.

Thursday was Senior Night for the Lady Grizz, but it was the Bobcat senior that had all the fun. Led by senior guard Nicole Hansen’s game-high 21 points, the Bobcats jumped on Logan early and the Grizzlies never recovered.

Fellow senior Amy Andrus chipped in a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds for Sky View, after posting a monster 26-point, 16-rebound game in the valley rivals last meeting.

After blowing out Logan in the early moments of their last contest, the Grizzlies stayed close early behind the hot shooting of junior guard Kaylee Merrill. Merrill connected on two 3-pointers in the opening period and scored eight of her 11 points during that span to keep Logan close.

Merrill’s second trey pulled the Grizzlies to within three, 17-14, with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter. The Bobcats would buckle down from there though, as they scored the final four points of the quarter to regain the momentum.

“We came out a little sluggish in the first quarter, but pretty well took charge in that second quarter and started getting after it on the defensive end,” said Sky View coach Paul Hansen. “Offensively we were very patient and pounded it down inside — we missed a lot of shots, but we got the rebounds and put them back up. I was pleased with the way they played.”

The second quarter did indeed prove to be the turning point for the Bobcats as Andrus went to work inside on the offensive end, and defensively they shut the Grizzlies down. Andrus finished the quarter with eight points — two more than the entire Logan team — and the Bobcats made more shots than the Grizzlies attempted.

A large key to the shot disparity was turnovers. The Bobcats forced 10 during their run in the second quarter and an astounding 27 for the game. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, Sky View was well in control with a 21-point lead, 44-23.

“It almost seems worse than that watching it,” coach Hansen said. “It’s one of those games where you’re only ahead a few and it seems like you should be ahead a lot because you’re dominating the game.”

Despite the lopsidedness, the Logan seniors weren’t about to lay down in their final home game against their valley rivals. Guard Whitney Fairbanks caught fire in the third quarter as she scored 10 of her team-high 20 points in that period.

The Grizzlies defense picked up as well, as they managed to hold the Bobcats to only three field goals in the third quarter. Following Logan 3-pointer to open the fourth, Sky View found a lead that had been nearly 30 at one point cut to 14.

From there it was all Sky View.

Hansen took over from that point, scoring nine of her 21 points in the final quarter as the Bobcats pulled away for good.

“Nicole was driving a little more, and that’s what we’ve been trying to get her to do,” coach Hansen said. “She’s kind of playing out of position there at the point guard, she likes to go down in and be banging around a little bit. I think she was just a little more aggressive tonight, and that was working for us.”

Despite the easy victory, the Bobcats know they need to improve in some facets of the game before they tangle with Highland in the first round of the state playoffs Tuesday.

“We just have got to get over a few things that we do throughout the game, like our free throws sometimes let down and we’ve got to not turn it over so much,” Hansen said. “This is a good win going into state.”

As a team the Bobcats did struggle from the line, connecting on only 14-of-27 (52 percent) from the charity stripe. Hansen’s coach and father agreed with the team’s need for improvement.

“We missed a lot of free throws,” coach Hansen said. “Amy was under her percentage and I know Nicole was way under hers. Going against Highland … I’m assuming it will be physical as well. We don’t have a problem playing that way, so tonight was probably good.”

Playoffs begin at Sky View against Highland on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
