Scheduled pay increases survive school district budget cuts

Teacher and employee scheduled pay increases — called steps and lanes — passed in the Cache County School District preliminary budget for 2010-11. Teachers expressed strong opposition to a possible freeze of steps and lanes in the May 21 board meeting. Board members on several occasions also expressed a desire not to make cuts to teacher’s pay — and expected pay — unless they have no alternative. Tuesday evening the Cache School Board passed a budget that cut $3.47 million from expected expenses. (Continued…)

Teachers voice opposition to a salary freeze

Teachers want the school district to keep “steps and lane” salary increases. This is the message five teachers gave the school board Thursday evening. Ilene Davies, president of the Cache Education Association, told the board that steps and lanes are a priority to CEA members. “This practice will help teachers feel like they can go into the profession,” said Davies. “If we do not fund them, we will lose the best and the brightest.” (Continued…)

The Cache County School Board is planning to finalize the boundaries of Greenville, North Park, Summit, Sunrise and the new Smithfield elementary school tonight. According to posted agenda the board will meet at 4:30 p.m. in a study session to discuss the school boundaries. North Cache elementary schools will switch to K-5 next year

The Cache school board let their original decision stand to switch Sunrise, Summit, North Park and Greenville elementary schools to K-5. Two weeks ago the school board listened to a room full of citizens express their opinion over the change. Many were for it. More were against it. A crowd of parents and community members living within the Cache County School District boundaries joined the school board’s study session on Thursday evening to voice opinions on the potential impending elementary school configuration change. At the last school board meeting, the vote to change all of the Smithfield elementary schools to a Kindergarten through 5th grade configuration passed, but because of outcry from some community members, the board is revisiting the issue. The Cache County School District board of education meets this evening to discuss the elementary school grade configurations and new boundaries. The board had previously decided to change all north valley elementary schools to K-5. This was against the recommendation by Superintendent Norton and the a opinion ballot sent to parents for the affected schools. Tonight will only be a discussion of the matter. NORTH LOGAN—The Cache County School Board heard from three members of the community tonight to speak regarding the configuration of the elementary schools that serve Smithfield (Summit, Sunrise, Greenville and North Park). Two of the community representatives were parents of affected students, one was a former teacher in Logan School District, and all three presented strong opinions toward configuring all of the elementary schools for Smithfield to contain Kindergarten through 5th grades. The grade configuration for northern elementary schools should be approved tomorrow night by the CCSD Board of Education. Currently Sunrise and North Park elementary schools serve grades K-2 while Summit and Greenville elementary schools serve grades 3-5. The new elementary school under construction in Smithfield will have to be a k-5 school. The school district administration sent ballots to parents asking if they would prefer changing all elementary schools to K-5. The overwhelming majority of those who responded want to keep the current arrangement. The school board will make the final decision tomorrow night during their regular school board meeting.
