Nine SVHS students were honored on Tuesday, Feb 16 at a Student of the Month luncheon. The luncheon was held in the Presentation room at Sky View and was catered by Ann Lusk. Students recognized this month were: Seniors: Luis Patino, Brooke Lindhardt and Boone Hansen, Juniors: Blake McKinley, AJ Vande Merwe and Jordan C. It’s a Saturday morning, and thirty high school students are gathered in a Sky View classroom. Half of them are sprawled across desks, their noses buried in books. The other half are animatedly discussing free speech, federalism, healthcare, and a variety of other government related issues. Any outsider stumbling upon such a scene would scratch their head and ask, “What kind of teenagers are these?” Meet Sky View’s 2010 “We the People” team. (Continued…)

Sky View high school administration are holding Cottage Meetings throughout the community. Cottage meetings are informal get togethers with no planned agenda. Come and chat with Sky View administrators about your thoughts, ideas, concerns. Their plan is to simply listen and keep their ears close to the ground and hear from the community. The Cache County School Board is planning to finalize the boundaries of Greenville, North Park, Summit, Sunrise and the new Smithfield elementary school tonight. According to posted agenda the board will meet at 4:30 p.m. in a study session to discuss the school boundaries. Then at 5:30 p.m. during their regular meeting it is expected they will act on the boundary changes. (Continued…)

Similar concerns raised at second boundary meeting

On Thursday, school board Superintendent Steve Norton met again with parents and community members regarding the proposed boundaries for the five northern Cache Valley school district elementary schools. This time they met at Greenville Elementary to focus on Hyde Park and North Logan’s schools. The superintendent opened the meeting with the same explanations on school boundaries that he gave to the Smithfield community at Tuesday’s meeting. The school board tries to make neighborhood schools available to the children, but with an area the size of our district, that’s not always possible. (Continued…)

Parents discuss boundary concerns with administration

Superintendent Steve Norton began Tuesday evening with an explanation of how the district goes about setting boundaries. “The first thing you need to understand is we are a district that does not have neighborhood schools,” said Dr. Norton to the roughly forty attending the public meeting over proposed boundaries for five north Cache elementary schools. “We have schools located in some neighborhoods, but we are a community of so many different communities that we can’t have a school in every neighborhood.” (Continued…)

Two public hearings are scheduled over proposed boundaries for north Cache elementary schools. With a new school opening next year and the change of all elementary schools to K-5, boundaries will be set for Sunrise, Summit, Greenville, and North Park. The Cache County School District has updated the proposed boundary maps for North Park, Greenville, Sunrise, and Summit elementary schools as well as the new Smithfield school expected to be in use next year. With the school board decision to switch all elementary schools to K-5, the new boundaries are per school instead of an overlay. (Continued…)

The Cache school board let their original decision stand to switch Sunrise, Summit, North Park and Greenville elementary schools to K-5. Two weeks ago the school board listened to a room full of citizens express their opinion over the change. Many were for it. More were against it. Strong opinions expressed over elementary school configuration

A crowd of parents and community members living within the Cache County School District boundaries joined the school board’s study session on Thursday evening to voice opinions on the potential impending elementary school configuration change. At the last school board meeting, the vote to change all of the Smithfield elementary schools to a Kindergarten through 5th grade configuration passed, but because of outcry from some community members, the board is revisiting the issue.
