The Smithfield City Council seems to have a fairly routine meeting scheduled for Wednesday evening. They plan to consider: setting the fee schedule for 2012, adopting 2012 city council meeting rules of conduct, signing an agreement over the northern canal, approving Smithfield Implement’s request to put signs on the grass in front of the store. Last week in a meeting that stretched on for over four hours the Smithfield City Council listened for nearly two and a half of those hours to residents voice concerns over a proposed 19.6% increase in property tax; before vowing to go back and see if there were places that they could make any deeper cuts. In a night where there was great respect expressed for the members of the Smithfield Mayor and City Council Members, a civilized and impassioned plea from residents sent a message to the council that now is not the time for a proposed 19.6% property tax increase.
