Obituaries are published for free on the Smithfield Sun. Usually your funeral director will help create and place the obituary. If you are submitting the obituary yourself, simply email the text and photographs to submissions@smithfieldsun.com. We will need to confirm the details of the obituary before publication so please review the following instructions.

Required information

1. Your name and phone number
2. The name and phone number of the mortuary handling the funeral arrangements

Suggested information

1. Full name
2. Date of birth
3. Date of death
4. City
5. Preceded in death by
6. Survived by
7. Visitation information (date, time and location)
8. Service information (date, time and location)
9. Interment
10. Memorial preferences (if any)

The Smithfield Sun is not limited to short texts and one photograph. Please include as much information you feel is needed to give proper respect for the deceased. Remember to include details of their life. Tell interesting stories that illustrate who they were and what they meant to their family and friends.

Photographs

We encourage you to submit several (or even a dozen) large photographs from the person’s life. Pick one photograph as the “key” photograph to be included with the obituary index. But also include photographs that illustrate the deceased life.

When submitting photographs please remember to:

1. use large photographs (up to 6 MB per image)
2. send each photograph as a separate email
3. include the name of the deceased in the subject line and a photograph number
4. include in the email body a short title and a caption that should accompany the photograph

Tributes

Family members and friends are encouraged to send in tributes to be included with obituaries that are already published. Simply send the tribute to submissions@smithfieldsun.com. Remember to include your full name and a contact phone number.
