Don Williams honored for Lions Club service

Long time Smithfield resident Don Williams was honored this week after reaching a significant milestone of serving 50 years as a member of the Smithfield Lions Club. Don and his wife Mary Alice, who have been married for 62 Years, and have lived in Smithfield for 46 Years. He joined the Lions in 1959 and has enjoyed active membership and public service throughout. Don served as President of the Lions in 1972-73, and again in 1987-88. The district governor of Utah came to Smithfield in part, to make the award to Don and recognize his years of service.

The Smithfield Lions club is one of the more active Lions organizations in the State. They are one of very few who have their own Lions building. The Lions clubhouse serves as a meeting place for the Lions twice monthly meetings as well as being available for rental for compatible public and private activities.

The Smithfield lions raise funding by their efforts providing the food and snacks at the Smithfield Blue Sox baseball games. They also engage in other traditional fund-raising activities. In turn they provide significant donations to the International Lions sponsored causes such as eyesight and diabetes worldwide.

The Smithfield club also awards two scholarships to graduating Sky View seniors. They donate to Cancer research and support many community efforts. Many park improvements have been provided to Smithfield by the Lions club.
