Sky View student achievements

We want to start a new tradition, recognizing all of the great things happening here at Sky View High School. Today’s recognition will be a little lengthy, and will not include all of the great things that have happened this year, but hopefully will give you and idea of some of the things occurring.

Sterling Scholars

We had thirteen students representing Sky View for Deseret News Sterling Scholar. Four students were finalists and two were State winners. Sky View hasn’t had a State winner since 2004.

Debate

Sky View High School’s Debate Team took State this year for the 8th year in a row and qualified 11 students for Nationals. Mrs. Kunz, the coach, received her 2 Diamond Award in the National Forensic League.

We The People

We The People — A National Competition focusing on the United States Constitution.

The Sky View High School team won the competition for the fourth straight year and will be traveling to Washington D.C. at the end of April to represent Utah in the National Competition.

Art

Aly Johnson was the recipient of the Congressional Award. Morgan Stevenson was awarded a $500 Scholarship at Springville All State. Zan Burningham, Art teacher, recently finished writing the State Elementary Art Core

Cereal Art

On Saturday, April 3, Doyle Geddes, humanities teacher, at Sky View High School along with 150 students, created at 6,500 square foot replica of Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night using two tons of breakfast cereal donated by Malt-O-Meal. Each year, Geddes and his humanities students have created “Cereal Art” projects as a way of helping students connect with art. For the last three years, Geddes has dreamed of doing something on a grander scale. This year, he made that dream a reality and has gained National and International attention.

Athletics

Tanner Hunt received a full ride scholarship in track to Utah State University

Sky View has four students who will be signing contracts to play basketball at the following Universities:

  • Amy Andrus to Metro State in Denver, CO (D-2School)
  • Nicole Hansen, Aubrey Boehme and Taylor Rock will be signing to Otero Junior college.

Air Force

Scott Watts received a Presidential Scholarship to the Air Force Academy.

Community Service

Sky View students and teacher Kaye Dawn Falslev initiated a “Texting Campaign” to create more awareness for public safety. The purpose was to encourage students to not drive while texting. Students involved were Skyler Andreasen, Samantha Murray, Mikelle Child, and Corinne Thomson. It received a lot of public praise.

HOSA

The Health Occupation Students of America did an amazing job representing Sky View taking 2nd place at State, making them National Qualifiers. The Team consisted of Boone Hansen, Konner Karren, Krista Kingston and Melanie Falslev.

FFA

Future Farmers of America recently competed at the FFA State Convention. They received a Superior Chapter Award.

Rebekka Wallentine took 3rd place at State in Prepared Public Speaking. Arianna Rees placed 4th out of 50 people as a finalist in Job Interview Contest. Four students received State FFA Degrees which is the highest award at the State Level, Trevor Smith, Arianna Rees, Rebekka Wallentine, and Chelsea Rigby. Ashley Mickelson won the “Supervised Ag. Experience” award of 5 bred ewes & $250 to start her own sheep herd.

Teachers, Dave Erickson and Clinton Aston received Honorary State FFA Degree. This is the equivalent of a Lifetime Achievement Award for running a superior program.

FBLA

Future Business Leaders of America recently participated at the State Leadership Conference. Four of those students will be attending Nationals in Nashville, Tennessee!

There were over 1,400 FBLA members in attendance at this conference. Many of the competitions had over 60 members competing. It is a great accomplishment for these Sky View students to place top ten in their events.
